The Raman spectrum of orthorhombic sulphur has been measured in the frequency range 0‐100 cm −1 for all polarisations. The A 1 g ( zz ) and B 1 g ( xy ) spectra have been clarified by later subtraction of unwanted scattering belonging to other polarisations. Definite assignments are made for all but one A 1 g and one B 2 g mode. An interpretation of the intensities observed in the A 1 g and B 1 g spectra is given in terms of the rotational motion of the S 8 molecules affecting their contribution to the crystal polarisability.
