Raman spectra of polycrystalline films of CFCl 3 have been recorded at 77K. Chlorine isotope splittings have been observed for four of the six fundamentals in agreement with predictions. The degenerate CCl stretching band ν 4 shows evidence of both site and factor group splitting and possibly LO and TO components. To account for the observed splittings it is suggested that solid CFCl 3 has a non‐centrosymmetric orthorhombic crystal structure at 77K.
