Abstract The first‐order Raman spectra of layer compounds HgI 2 in both red and yellow phases have been measured in the temperature region from −200°C to 150°C. A sudden change in the spectra was observed at the temperature of the phase change. Three strong Raman bands were observed in each phase. An interpretation of the spectra has been carried out on the basis of the group theoretical analysis for the layer symmetry and the crystal symmetry. The strength of the interlayer force in each phase has been estimated from the experiments.
