These standards have been developed for pharmacists involved with investigational drugs in their institutions and replace the previously published ‘SHPA Policy Guidelines for Investigational Drugs’. 1 This document deals with investigational drugs used in clinical trials and under the Special Access Scheme (SAS). 2 Hospitals and other healthcare agencies are the major centres for clinical studies with investigational drugs and pharmacists in these institutions should be involved with policies and procedures for the safe and ethical use of these drugs.
