Children undergo many changes related to growth and development as they move from birth to adulthood. Throughout this period the pharmacokinetic processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion also undergo significant changes. These changes can affect the safety and efficacy of medications administered to children and account for the differences in dosing and toxicity seen in this population. This paper describes the pharmacokinetic changes throughout the neonatal period, childhood and into adolescence along with some practical advice on managing medications in these populations.
