The authors present a new multidimensional framework for empathy through the development and analysis of the Conditions for Empathy in Counseling Scale. Exploratory factor analysis led to retention of 6 factors related to counselor conceptualization of empathic processes. The rationale, procedures, initial data, and implications for counseling are discussed.
