Why do Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai boast so many head offices of foreign companies in the Asia‐Pacific region? A review of the social and economic policies of those megalopolises, complemented with feedback from 52 businesspeople who have lived and worked there, reveals that to varying degrees, each of these urban centers offers a business‐friendly environment, political stability, advantageous tax policies, and a highly educated workforce. These characteristics appeal to the leaders of multinational firms, as well as to individuals seeking an international experience with an established organization or their own startup.
