The basic dynamic in personalized networks of influence in China, guanxi is widely discussed but sorely misunderstood by Westerners seeking to conduct business in or with that nation. The intricacies of its cultural nuances, which can confound outsiders, and the widespread abuse of its practices, which have resulted in corruption, have prevented both scholars and practitioners from fully understanding and appreciating the true purpose of guanxi in any interpersonal relationship. An integrative analysis of guanxi demystifies the concept and offers guidance on how to best employ it as a management tool for effective business decision making in the Chinese marketplace. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
