At the 11 acute care facilities and system office of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System (SCLHS), the Lean Thinking performance improvement model has enabled top leaders and employees at all levels of the organization to work together to improve quality and processes for the benefit of patients and shareholders. Their commitment to cost‐effective care and the elimination of waste, bolstered by comprehensive training and a creative compensation program, has saved the SCLHS millions in just four years and built a sturdy and replicable foundation for sustainable culture change. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
