This article provides a framework for cross‐border merger‐and‐acquisition (M&A) activity. Based on an extensive study into American‐Dutch merger processes, a number of lessons can be drawn. Where many studies result in shortlists of merger “best practices,” dealing with part of the problem, this article provides an enhanced, more integral approach. Lessons learned are structured and integrated into a modified version of the Balanced Scorecard: the M&A Scorecard. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
