The climatic characteristics of maximum precipitation amounts for short‐term intervals of 10, 30, 60 and 120 minutes as well as for 24h were investigated along the Zagreb‐Rijeka transect of about 150 km in length. Three selected stations were located in three different climatic zones: continental lowland, transitional mountainous area between the Alps and the mountain ridge of Dinaridi, and the Adriatic coast. The Jenkinson method was used to estimate the expected precipitation maxima for various return periods. The frequency distribution of maximum precipitation amounts during the year was analysed in relation to the synoptic situations.
