An index method for analysing precipitation surplus or deficit is presented. By indexing the surplus or deficit to the long‐term mean annual precipitation, temporal and spatial comparisons are facilitated. Preliminary results indicate that the computed indices are normally distributed and are amenable to the types of frequency and probability analyses normally used in water resources problems. It seems that the computed indices could be used for characterizing the intensity and severity of a precipitation deficit or drought spell.
