Analysis of protein profiles of the members of Azotobacteraceae suggests that the genus Azotobacter consists of a heterogeneous group of bacteria, of which Azotobacter beijerinckii should possibly be separated to a new genus. Azomonas agilis and Azomonas macrocytogenes are only 26 percent related to each other.
