The phytopathogenic pseudomonad Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola possesses an isomerase which converts mannose to fructose. The synthesis of this enzyme is constitutive. The K M value for mannose is 0.02 M. Fe 2 + , Mg 2 + and Mn 2 + ions stimulate the enzyme activity, whereas Cu 2 + and Zn 2 + iones are inhibitors. Since the enzymes mannokinase and phosphomannose isomerase could not be detected, the isomerase and an inducible fructokinase must have a function in the metabolism of mannose by this bacterium.
