Using simulation programs for batch secondary metabolite fermentations, I developed a “hybrid” process optimization approach characterized by considering pragmatic aspects related to the theoretical concept as well as methodical aspects regarding experimental experience. Influences and mutual relationships of starting parameters amenable to change are discussed with the aim of defining an efficient strategy of optimization, using a classification scheme for the model parameters employed. Due to mutual and stochastic influences of these parameters, there remain only a few experiments to be carried out, and their number depends on the sensitivity of the gain function to the respective parameter. Some requirements any simulation program must fulfil in order to help optimize fermentation processes are pointed out.
