Cover illustration: Interactions among metallic nanoparticles (MNPs), biological, and edaphic factors. These factors, including organic acids, sugars, proteins, anions, salts (cations), charged polymers on bacterial surfaces cause NPs to either aggregate or stabilize (via surface coating) dependent on specific interactions between individual factors and different NPs. Whether stabilized or aggregated, the NPs release metal ions to different extents. Both the NPs and ions are bioreactive, but when aggregated or due to sorption by factors, are reduced in their reactivity. Meanwhile, active or free NPs or ions modify root (and shoot) development, slow (stasis) or inhibit (cidal) fungal growth, reduce or stimulate bacterial populations, and alter plant or microbial physiology, including the induction of the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which in turn protect bacterial cells from toxicity.
