Cover illustration: The efficient hydrolysis of starch is not limited to plant‐associated microorganisms. Here, α‐amylase producing bacteria isolated from a marine sediment were investigated. The activity of α‐amylase from Bacillus subtilis S8–18 is shown on insoluble raw starch granules. The enzyme activity can be visualized directly on starch granules, where pits and cracks appear after treatment. The scanning electron micrographs give evidence of peripheral degradation of the centrifugal type on corn starch. On wheat starch (not depicted), centripetal hydrolysis has been shown from the surface towards the centre of the granule. (Photo: R.
