Heavy metal contaminated creek in the former uranium mining area in Eastern Thuringia, Germany. The iron precipitates show the infl uence of acid mine drainage waters which lead to heavy metal contaminations in the area. The investigation of soil microbe communities led to detection of streptomycetes with high resisitance levels towards metal and salt concentrations found. Streptomycetes producing chelating compounds are then used to promote plant growth in bioremediation by phytoextraction. Other heavy metal resistant strains are investigated for their capacity to retain heavy metals from contaminated waters. (Foto: Erika Kothe, Jena, Germany)
