Screening for methanotrophic bacteria led to the isolation of a Methylosinus trichosporium strain which was characterized by the ability to produce a bright red‐violet pigment, which was found to be nearly insoluble in water. This communication reports on the formation, isolation, and purification of the pigment and its separation into the components methylosin A and B. By comparison of physico‐chemical parameters we identified the pigment as a prodiginine‐type compound. The chemical constitution of methylosin B was established. To our knowledge this is the first observation of prodiginine‐type compounds to be metabolites of methanotrophic bacteria.
