In iron‐deficient media the yeast Candida guilliermondii shows overproduction of riboflavin which is excreted into the medium. The excreted riboflavin is taken up again by a part of the cells for a limited culture period. This accumulation of riboflavin is correlated with a diauxic growth. It is influenced by addition of riboflavin and iron. Exogenous riboflavin promotes the growth. In media with extreme iron‐deficiency the accumulation as well as the diauxic growth were not observed. The accumulating cells are specific heavier than non‐accumulating, and it is easy to separate these cells. The characterization of the two types of cells has shown that the accumulating cells are physiologically more active than the non‐accumulating cells.
