Stationary contents of ATP in autotrophically grown Chlorella fusca at 30 °C have been measured by a radiochemical method that gives, in variants, absolute or relative values. These contents are about 1.5 μmoles/g fresh weight and change by at most 15% between conditions of optimal energy supply (light, air) and minimal supply (dark, nitrogen). ATP formation rates, in the different conditions, have been derived from the rate of change in ATP content on change of condition, from polarography and from Warburg manometry. These rates differ greatly between cells in different conditions of energy supply. The velocities of energy‐dependent (active) Rb uptake correlate much better with these ATP formation rates than with the ATP levels.
