Leakage material released by Saccharomyces cerevisiae incubated in water was analyzed after separation into two fractions by silica gel. The supernatant fraction shows an absorption maximum at about 260 nm (260 nm fraction) but no surface activity. The second fraction eluted from the gel (EL fraction) is characterized by its remarkable surface activity while lacking significant absorbancy at 260 nm. The EL fraction contains two peptides one of which may be cyclic. Addition of the EL fraction contains two peptides one of which may be cyclic. Addition of the EL fraction only stimulated the onset of cell multiplication (reduced lag phase). In contrast, addition of the 260 nm fraction only affected later cell divisions (increased log phase growth). The bearing of leakage components on the regulation of growth and cell division is discussed.
