Under conditions of thymine starvation the cells of the thyminerequiring strain E. coli CR 34 elongate and give rise to filamentous forms without septa. In 95% of the cells the 3 H‐thymidine labelled material is characteristically confined to the center of the cells and does not extend out to the tips of the filaments. With different methods it is shown that a proportion of the cells still may divide once when DNA synthesis is inhibited by thymine depletion. It is suggested, that a filament formed under conditions of thymine starvation mostly contains one „nucleus”.
