The dispersion relation and the convergence of a modified finite‐difference time‐domain scheme (MFDTD), which has fourth‐order convergence and excellent broadband characteristics, are presented. The accuracy of several low‐dispersion finite‐difference time‐domain schemes in 2‐D is compared with that of the MFDTD, via direct evaluation of the dispersion relation. Convergence of the FDTD and the MFDTD in 2‐D are also examined. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
