A convenient technique for the exact determination of the longitudinal cavity modes of a distributed feed‐back (DFB) laser is presented. The method employs the argument principle method (APM) to find the singular points of the characteristic equation derived from consideration of the counter propagating coupled modes within the cavity. The method is applied to both linear and circular grating laser diodes. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
