Heparin and low molecular mass heparin (LMMH) consists of complex mixtures of sulphated linear oligosaccharides that are difficult to analyse. An on‐line size exclusion chromatographic/electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometric method that allows the determination of more than 60 components in an LMMH preparation is presented. The experimental setup includes on‐line cation exchange in order to prevent massive adducting in the ESI interface. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
