The definition of leadership continues to evolve and has recently undergone many changes from its male‐dominated past through the contributions of women leaders, the Millennial cohort, contemporary insights from research, surveys, and informed opinion. Many qualities have been added to the list that describes a leader's behavior. It is noted that the list has become too long to be useful to a practitioner. The various movements that contributed to a contemporary definition of leadership are outlined. The importance of followers as implementers and the definition of leadership as a process are presented through the eyes of a practitioner. The leadership process offers the most promise for a useful and contemporary definition of leadership. Recommendations are made to shape future research to include the rise of servant leadership among Millennials.
