Tilmicosin was radiolabelled with carbon‐14 on the 3,5‐dimethylpiperidinyl sidechain as a requirement for animal metabolism studies. A new radiosynthesis of 3,5‐dimethyl‐piperidine was developed for this purpose. Incorporation into the desmycosin nucleus was accomplished by a reductive amination reaction.
