This article describes synthesis of all 7 N‐trideuteromethyl isotopomers of caffeine by reaction of trideuteromethyl iodide (C 2 H 3 I) with the appropriate xanthine molecules. The use of proton. deuterium and carbon‐13‐NMR as a first step in purity assessment revealed 13 C‐NMR deuterium isotope effects on the resonance of perdeuteromethyl carbons.
