Lithiation of diethyl methylphosphonate ( 1 ) with n ‐butyllithium followed by carbonation with [ 14 C]carbon dioxide and esterification with diazoethane afforded high specific activity triethyl [1‐ 14 C]phosphonoacetate ( 4 ) in 62% yield.
