The synthesis of deuterium‐labelled [ 2 H 6 ]‐etorphine and [ 2 H 6 ]‐dihydroetorphine from codeine is described. The isotopically labelled compounds are used as internal standards in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) assays. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
