Combinatorial libraries offer a new powerful tool for gathering empirical information about host/guest interactions and for developing catalysts for organic reactions. Combinatorial approaches to molecular recognition are discussed, i.e. screening of libraries of ligands with synthetic receptors and libraries of synthetic receptors with the ligands for which selective binding is desired. Recent achievements in the development of new catalysts for organic synthesis using combinatorial approaches are also reviewed.
