Pyrrolo‐ and thiophenoperylenedicarboximides 4 and 7 were prepared by reductive cyclization of 1‐nitroperylenedicarboximides 3 and 5 with phosphorous acid esters and sulfur, respectively. The imides 4 and 7 are highly fluorescent and are easily monofunctionalized by nucleophilic substitution reactions which makes them useful for fluorescent labeling.
