The synthesis of the readily available racemate of the nitroxide radical 5 is described. The product exhibits exclusively the trans configuration. The cis product was not obtained. Optically pure enantiomers of 5 were isolated in gram quantities by chiral HPLC. Thus, separation of the enantiomers of a nitroxide radical was achieved for the first time. The structure of 5 was proven by a single‐crystal diffraction study.
