Irradiation of squaric acid ( 4 ) in an argon matrix at 10 K leads to ethynediol (dihydroxyacetylene) ( 1 ) via bis (hydroxyketenyl) 5 and deltic acid ( 6 ). The identification of 1 is based on the comparison between the experimental and calculated IR spectrum.
