The intense red color of the cell extracts of Polyangium fumosum , the producer of the tristhiazoline metabolite thiangazole A, is mainly caused by four new carotenoid pigments, i.e. di‐ O ‐demethylspirilloxanthin ( 1 ), its β‐glucoside 2 and the glucoside fatty acid esters 3 and 4 . Their structures were elucidated by IR, UV, and NMR spectroscopy and by mass spectrometry.
