Treatment of 2‐(2‐oxopropylthio)benzoxazoles 1a – d with an excess of primary amines in acetic acid or in perchloric acid affords 3‐substituted 2‐(2‐hydroxyphenylimino)‐4‐methylthiazoles 4a – q . Interaction of thiazoles 4a,i with diazomethane leads to the corresponding O ‐methyl derivatives. The structure of compounds 4a – q is confirmed by an X‐ray analysis of compound 4d .
