Note of the Synthesis of 3,7‐Dicyano‐1,5‐dimethylsemibullvalene The crystalline mixture of the tetrabromodinitriles 6 and 7 , which is readily available in three steps from 1,5‐dimethylbicyclo[3.3.0]octane‐3,7‐dione, is reduced by the zinc‐copper couple in dry tetrahydrofuran in the presence of copper(I) chloride under ultrasonic radiation affording brominated semibullvalenes. Addition of water to the reaction mixture and resumption of the procedure eventually results in complete reduction producing the title compound 3a in good yield.
