Saturated nitriles give no band in the accessible wavelength range but do so when OAc or Br are in geminal position to CN. Is the latter combination present at C‐1 then ( R ) configuration leads to a positive CD between 230 and 240 nm. The Cotton effect of 1‐cyanoglycals follows the same rule as that found for the parent glycals.
