Structure Elucidation of C 10 H 14 ‐Dehydroterpenes by Reaction Gas‐Chromatography. – Identification of New Terpene Constituents in Essential Oils Alumina‐catalyzed dehydration of C 10 H 16 O‐monoterpene alcohols and elimination of acetic acid from C 10 H 15 OCOCH 3 ‐monoterpene acetates were carried out in the injection port of a gas chromatograph. The C 10 H 14 ‐monoterpene hydrocarbons formed were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. By means of this reaction gas chromatographic technique, verbenene ( 7 ) and 1,5,8‐ p ‐menthatriene ( 13 ) were identified unequivocally, for the first time, as constituents of essential oils.
