A New Total Synthesis of Fenchone A new and a simple method for a three‐step total synthesis of the title substance 7 is described. Diels‐Alder reaction of methylcyclopentadiene with 2‐chloroacrylonitrile catalyzed by Cu(BF 4 ) 2 yields mainly 1‐methyl‐5‐norbornen‐2‐one ( 1 ), which after hydrogenation to 1 ‐methyl‐2‐norbornanone ( 5 ) is methylated to fenchone ( 7 ).
