Abstract Nobel Laureate Sir W. Arthur Lewis died in June of this year. His most celebrated works in development economics were published whilst he was at the University of Manchester between 1947 and 1958 where, from 1949, he occupied the Stanley Jevons Chair of Political Economy. This brief review is intended as a modest tribute to the exciting work of that period.
