In recent years much prominence has been given to environmental issues and to the interrelationships between environmental and economic policies. At the same time, concern has also been expressed over the potential tradeoffs between environmental policies and trade policies in so far as the former can be used as protectionist devices. The paper presents some empirical evidence of the impact of environmental policies on agricultural trade for 10 agricultural commodities. It is concluded that trade for the most polluting commodities has been altered from what is predicted by the Heckscher‐Ohlin (H‐O) theorem of comparative advantage.
