The concept of sustainable development requires a different approach to the appraisal of agricultural projects. The introduction of a new sustainability criterion creates complex policy problems, including the definition of sustainable levels of resource use in agriculture, trade‐offs between environmental and income objectives and differences in the perspectives of farmers and decision‐makers. Multicriteria analysis (MCA) is shown to be a potentially useful analytical tool in sustainability‐oriented project appraisal. Outcomes of cost‐benefit analysis (CBA) may be used as an input to MCA.
