The synthesis of nitrogen containing heterocycles from arylidene barbituric acid and various ammonia derivatives such as phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, hydroxylamine hydrochloride and aminoguanidine hydrochloride via a simple and efficient cyclocondensation in an alkaline aqueous medium is described. This improved greener synthetic methodology provides a convenient direct approach using water as a green solvent and potassium carbonate (K 2 CO 3 ) as a green base for the synthesis of pyrazolopyrimidines, isoxazolopyrimidines and pyrimidopyrimidines in excellent yields.
