The electron impact mass spectrometric behaviour of three 2‐methyl‐2‐chloromercuriomethyl‐2,6‐dihydro‐5 H ‐pyrano[3,2‐ c ]quinolin‐5‐ones have been studied in detail with the aid of metastable ion data. The primary loss of C 4 H 7 , necessarily involving an unusual HgCl rearrangement, is discussed and justified by the formation of a thermodinamically stable Hg‐containing cyclic structure.
