Polyfunctional quinolines were obtained via thermal cyclization of phenylaminocrotonates and malonanilides and characterized by uv, ir, and 1 H and 13 C nmr spectra. Dehydration of a derivative of 5‐hydroxymethyl‐4(1 H )‐quinolone yielded a derivative of 5 H ‐furo[2,3,4‐ de ]quinoline, representing a novel tricyclic system.
