Abstract A new synthesis of 4‐hydroxyproline was carried out starting from diethyl p ‐nitrobenzoylaminomalonate, which was converted by a three steps pathway into diethyl 4‐hydroxy‐1‐(4‐nitrobenzoyl)pyrrolidine‐2,2‐dicarboxylate, which afforded 4‐hydroxyproline via acid hydrolysis.
