The specific rates of solvolysis of S ‐ethyldibenzothiophenium trifluoromethanesulfonate have been found to give a good linear correlation with the previously determined specific rates of solvolysis of the triethyloxonium ion, and hence with the solvent nucleophilicity scale established from the triethyloxonium ion study. A value for the sensitivity to changes in solvent nucleophilicity ( 1 ) of greater than unity (1.15) is in accord with reactivity‐selectivity considerations.
