3‐Aralkylidene‐5‐arylthiophen‐2‐(3 H )ones can be prepared in two steps from 4‐aryl‐4‐oxobutanoic acids through the intermediacy of butenolides and thiophenones generated by the sequential action of acetic anhydride, sodium hydrosulfide and aromatic aldehydes.
